We think it should be stressed that many times victims of a disaster are left with very little and many times nothing at all. This includes their home, personal belongings, cars, jobs, check books, credit cards, legal documentation such as ID cards, driver licenses and social security cards. To say the least their lives have been severely disrupted. Since the lack of proper documentation may exist you may find it difficult to perform proper background checks as you would under normal circumstances. You should use your best discretion and try your best to at the least, obtain credit/ eviction /rental payment history and references from both personal and employers.

Also note, many times in large scale disasters, social workers and volunteers assist in the relocation of victims. Initially, a volunteer may contact you regarding availability of your property on behalf of the displaced person or family. Keep this in mind and do your best to maintaining clear and open dialogue.

Having empathy for people is something we all should have. The "Golden Rule" is in effect, treat people as you would like to be treated. Just remember, you are ultimately responsible for your property and whom you allow to take possession. Protect your investment, gather as much info as you can on each prospective new resident and use your best judgment.
